These Pictures Will Show You that Balmoral Castle is the the British Royal Family's Favorite Holiday Home

Balmoral Castle, one of the many residences of the British Royal Family, is arguable where members the royals are happiest at.  Let us take a short trip back in time and relish how the royals from the time of Queen Victoria to the present Royal Family enjoyed the beauty of the Scottish Highlands.


The estate in the Scottish Higlands was purchased by Prince Albert because it reminded him of her native German. After the prince's death, Queen Victoria spent more time in Balmoral, and also on Osborne House in the Isle of Wight as she endured the bitterness of the Prince Consort's death. It passed on the several generation of royals but one thing never changed - through the years, it has remained the favorite holiday home of kings, queens, princes and princesses.

After Victoria's death, the royal family continued to use Balmoral during annual autumn visits. His successor, King Edward VII, would spend many a time here hunting. 

 During George V's reign, Balmoral saw substantial improvements and formal gardens were added south of the castle... Still, it remained a favorite home to the Royal Family. In 1931, the gardens were opened to the public. 

When King Edward VIII abdicated in 1936, the ownership of Balmoral Castle remained with him since it was his personal property that he inherited from his father. A financial settlement was offered to the exiled former-king which transferred the estate's ownership to the new King, George VI. Many happy moments, too, were spent here by King George VI and her family, although royal visits ceased when World War II broke out. 

When Elizabeth II ascended to the throne in 1952, the Royal Family would spend summers in the estate from August until September. Herbaceous borders and a water garden were added by Prince Philip. 

Today, guests can enjoy the estate's garden and grounds. There are just so many things to do in Balmoral Castle! Visitors can join the safari tour or the guided walks that would give them the opportunity to marvel at  Scotland's amazing mountain view.
